China has spent decades trying to contain Christianity, and it is losing.

The nation that banned unauthorized church gatherings, demolished crosses from church buildings, and imprisoned pastors for preaching the Gospel is on track to potentially have the largest Christian population in the world. The government tried surveillance, raids, fines, and imprisonment. The Church grew anyway. Not in spite of the pressure. Some would argue because of it.

When comfort is removed from following Jesus, only the people who actually believe it keep going. And what is being built in China right now is a Church that has been tested in ways the Western Church has never experienced. That kind of faith does not stay contained. It spreads.

Governments that try to crush the Church have a consistent track record. The Church outlasts them every time.

You Are The Salt Of The Earth

When Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth,” He was speaking with deep historical meaning that many people today completely miss.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus says:

“You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt loses its savor, how shall it be salted? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.”

At first glance, people think Jesus was just talking about seasoning food.

But in the first-century world, salt was far more valuable than that.

Salt was essential for preservation.

Before refrigeration existed, salt was used to keep meat and fish from rotting. It slowed the spread of decay and corruption. Entire economies depended on it. In fact, the word salary comes from the Latin word salarium, which was the allowance Roman soldiers received to buy salt.

Salt was valuable because it kept decay from spreading.

So when Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth,” He was making a powerful statement about the role of His followers in the world.

Believers were meant to be the moral preservative of society.

Salt holds back corruption.

Salt slows decay.

Salt preserves what would otherwise rot.

Jesus was saying that the people of God are meant to stand in a decaying world and prevent it from collapsing into darkness.

But then comes the warning.

“If the salt loses its flavor…”

The Greek word Jesus used is μωρανθῇ (mōranthē). It literally means to become foolish, dull, or ineffective. It describes salt that has become contaminated or diluted so that it no longer preserves anything.

In ancient Palestine, salt was often mixed with minerals from the Dead Sea. If the true salt leached out, what remained looked like salt but had no preserving power.

It looked real.

But it had no effect.

And Jesus says something shocking about that kind of salt.

“It is good for nothing.”

Not mildly useful.

Not slightly helpful.

Good for nothing.

Because salt that cannot preserve decay has lost its purpose.

Now bring this to today.

The world is not falling apart because darkness exists.

Darkness has always existed.

The real problem is when the salt stops doing its job.

When believers refuse to stand for truth.

When churches avoid confronting sin.

When leaders preach comfort instead of conviction.

When Christians blend into culture rather than preserving righteousness.

Decay spreads.

Because salt is meant to slow corruption.

Romans 12:2 says:

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

The church was never called to mirror culture.

It was called to restrain it.

But here is the tragedy.

Many believers today want to be accepted more than they want to be effective.

They want to fit in instead of preserving truth.

They want applause instead of holiness.

But salt that blends in with decay does not stop decay.

It becomes part of it.

Jesus was warning His followers that their lives were meant to carry influence that resists corruption.

Not through arrogance.

Not through self-righteousness.

But through holiness, truth, and obedience.

Because the presence of genuine believers should make darkness uncomfortable.

Salt stings when it touches something infected.

But it also protects it from rotting.

So the question every believer must ask is this:

Are we preserving the world around us…

Or have we become salt that has lost its power?

Take Heart, I Have Overcome The World

John 16:33 (ESV) says, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

If you are walking through the hardest season you have ever known, these words were spoken for you. Jesus did not say this from a place of comfort and ease. He spoke it on the night before the cross. He knew betrayal was coming. He knew pain was coming. He knew His friends would feel confused and shaken. And yet, in that fragile moment, He spoke peace.

He does not pretend tribulation does not exist. He says plainly, “In the world you will have tribulation.” That means your struggle is not a sign that you failed God. It is not proof that you are distant. It is not evidence that your faith is weak. Hard seasons are not divine rejection. They are part of living in a world that is still waiting for full restoration.

But then comes the phrase that changes everything. “In me you may have peace.” Not in perfect circumstances. Not in answers. Not in control. In Him. Peace is not the removal of the storm. It is the presence of Jesus in the middle of it. It is the quiet assurance that even if everything around you feels unstable, the One holding you is not.

And then He says, “Take heart; I have overcome the world.” He does not say you must overcome it alone. He does not say victory depends on your strength. He says He has already done it. The cross looked like loss, but it was love winning. The grave looked final, but it was only a doorway to resurrection. The worst the world could unleash was absorbed by Christ and undone by His rising.

Grace means this: the pressure you feel is not bigger than the victory He secured. The tears you cry are not ignored. The questions you ask are not offensive to Him. He is not disappointed in your weakness. He is near to it. He is not irritated by your exhaustion. He carries it.

If you feel like you are barely holding on, hear this gently. You are not holding yourself together. He is holding you. His peace is not fragile. It does not shatter when circumstances shake. It flows from a finished work. Because He overcame the world, the world does not get the last word over your life.

The darkness you are walking through is not stronger than the light that walked out of the tomb. The grief you feel is not deeper than the love that chose you. The fear that whispers at night is not louder than the voice that said, “It is finished.”

Take heart. Not because the storm is small. But because your Savior is strong. Not because you see the whole path. But because the One who overcame is walking it with you. His peace is not something you earn. It is something you receive. And even now, in the middle of this difficult season, His peace is wrapping around you like steady hands that refuse to let go.
